Buggy safari dust and mud: the honest picture
If you are hoping to stay spotless, a buggy safari is the wrong morning out. The 18 km route on the private off-road course runs over dirt roads, forest tracks and uneven ground, and the vehicles ahead of you leave a trail of dust hanging in the air. By the end, it is on your arms, in your hair, on your shoes and somewhere inside your ears.
For most guests that is the point. Getting grubby without anyone minding is a big part of what makes the ride feel like a proper adventure rather than a sightseeing drive. Knowing in advance simply lets you dress for it and enjoy it.
Dust: the one thing you can count on
Dust is the constant. Every buggy kicks it up, and fine dust drifts back onto the next driver in the line. Keeping the safe distance the guide asks for helps a little, but nobody on the route escapes it entirely.
Two extras sold at the base are designed for exactly this: goggles and a bandana. Neither is covered by the fare and both are entirely optional, but many people like having their eyes and mouth covered when the track is at its dustiest. The helmet, which is included, keeps the worst of it off your head.
Mud and water: when conditions allow
The route includes small stream crossings and water-splash stops, and on those stretches you can expect to get splashed. Mud appears when conditions allow. It is never guaranteed: some days the ground is drier and the ride is mostly about dust, other days the wetter patches leave the buggies and their occupants spattered.
We do not promise mud and we do not promise you will stay dry. What you can rely on is that the route is an off-road one, and off-road ground is rarely clean.
Does the passenger seat keep you cleaner?
Not really. A passenger rides with a driver in the same buggy, along the same route and through the same splashes, so both people end up with roughly the same coating. Choosing the passenger seat is a good idea for other reasons, for instance if you would rather not drive, but avoiding dirt is not one of them.
The fares reflect the role, not the cleanliness: €30 for a driver and €15 for a passenger.
Cleaning up afterwards
Changing cabins and showers are available at the base. Rinse off, change into the clean clothes you brought and put the dusty ones in a bag, and you will travel back to your hotel in the return transfer feeling far fresher than when you climbed out of the buggy.
Bring a towel and a full change of clothes, including socks if you like. Most guests are glad they did.
Phones, cameras and photos
Fine dust gets everywhere, including into pockets and camera bags. If you take your phone along, a zip-lock bag or a closed pocket is a sensible home for it while you drive, and both hands belong on the wheel anyway.
If you would rather not risk your own camera, the base team offers photos and video, paid separately. We do not publish a price for this; it is arranged and paid for at the base.
A simple before-and-after routine
A little planning turns the dirt from a nuisance into part of the fun. This is the routine that works for most guests, from getting dressed at the hotel to stepping back into the transfer:
- Before: put on old, dark clothes and closed shoes, tie back long hair and pack a towel, clean clothes and a plastic bag.
- At the base: decide whether you want goggles or a bandana, and put your phone somewhere closed.
- On the route: keep the distance the guide asks for, which also means less of the dust from the buggy ahead.
- After: shower, change, bag up the dusty things and enjoy the ride back feeling clean.
Will the dirt wash out?
Dust usually shakes and washes out of ordinary clothing, but mud splashes on white or pale fabric can leave marks. That is why the recommendation is old, comfortable clothes in dark colours and closed shoes or trainers you do not treasure. Flip-flops are not suitable for driving in any case.
